What to Expect

Before Your Session

We want you to feel ready and relaxed for your session. Our newborn guide walks you through simple, easy tweaks to prepare your space, just enough to set the scene for beautiful photos. We’ll also plan ideas for your session: Whether you want something calm and focused on the baby or something more like a bagel brunch with the whole crew. 

During Your Session

Our sessions are natural and flexible. We come in with a plan and build on it as we go—adjusting for the baby’s pace and the energy in the house. We bring calm, and we give guidance and suggest poses when it’s helpful, but mainly we just let you be yourselves and capture what happens. 

After Your Session

Your gallery arrives within 2-3 weeks — and that’s not where we disappear. We’ll help you figure out what to print, what works as wall art, and what to send to grandparents. The goal is for these photos to actually live in your life, not sit in a folder on your computer.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

This depends on your preferences. If you want pictures of your baby dreamy, with their eyes closed, the best time for a newborn baby photography session is the first 10 days. If you wait a little longer, you’ll have more awake time during your session where your kid will be alert with their eyes opened. We suggest you don’t stress yourself—newborn pictures can be anything in the first three months. Waiting a bit can give mom a moment to recover from giving birth and the whole family to bond with your child.

Newborn photography sessions last up to two hours long. We take our time in newborn photography sessions and don’t book another session directly after, so that we can maintain a relaxed environment, and take time to pause for feedings, to clean up messes, for wardrobe changes, and to breathe and keep it light.

While we want to capture how you’re living, having too much clutter in your environment can distract from what’s most important: You and your growing family. We recommend cleaning up your space a bit and where possible declutter the areas that will be in your pictures. We’ll be happy to discuss the best approach here. And all that said, some people just really dig the ‘everything is falling apart, this is what parenting looks like’ aesthetic, so if that’s you we can discuss as well.

Our newborn photo sessions are in your home both because it reduces some of the stress of trying to travel somewhere with your newborn, but also because so much of newborn photography is about capturing where you and your family are in this new stage of your lives. Families move—especially as they grow—and we find that folks love to have a memory that includes their home at the time. So don’t worry about whether your place is small or fancy, just have it be you. From there, we can plan with you on how to capture your home’s best side.

You, your baby, and your family should feel comfortable and pretty. Don’t stress yourself out about your wardrobe, but don’t wear your pijamas either (unless your PJs are just fabulous). Choose fabrics that are soft and comfortable for your newborn to keep them happy during the session (babies tend not to like jeans). We provide guidance and inspiration for outfits and wardrobe to our clients, so you won’t be left hanging.
